Momento Market was founded in early 2021 to allow sports fans, collectors, and enthusiasts to buy football shirts directly from the club's dressing room. With in-house authentication and storage, the problem of counterfeits and replicas in the collectible football space is solved.

Starting with just the idea of in-game shirt auctions, I joined Momento as their Lead Product Designer building the user experience and mobile application for iOS and Android. After our launch in Q3 2022, we successfully kicked off the first auction during the Italian Serie A featuring AC Milan versus Bologna. Trusted and loved by our fans, we appeared in Forbes, Highsnobiety, Bloomberg, Atlaninsights, Sportsbusinessjournal, and many more.

The heart of the user experience is the digital certificate of authenticity with which a user can claim ownership of the shirt bought through an auction. Shirts are directly transferred to a secure vault for storage, and the user can at any time redeem the shirt through the app.

The design of the dCOA was inspired by sports trading cards and contains all relevant information about the game and the status of the shirts.

The design challenge for the card was to include a significant number of data points while keeping the visual design as clean as possible. To visually communicate the genuinity, I designed an "authentic memorabilia" skeuomorphic watermark, which changes colors while moving your phone.

During a match, the content is dynamically updated to show the actual score or player achievements on the top right corner with badges such as for goals and athlete of the match. Also, the colors of the card are dynamic to match the shirt's design.

Every shirt lives on a dedicated screen where the user can see more contextual information below the card in an overlay. Widgets display the shirt's state, and additional information is shared about the player and the shirt's story.

Fixed on the bottom of the screen is the primary interactive component enabling the user to see the highest bidder and execute bids.

PRIMERA DIVISIÓN, SERIE A, UEFA CL, NWSL, FIFA WORLD CUP

We hosted auctions in the Spanish Primera División, Italian Serie A, UEFA Champions League, American NWSL, and FIFA World Cup.

When the club announces the player lineup, shirt auctions are activated with Pre-Bids. Pre-bids are private, and at match-kickoff, the auction starts at the highest Pre-Bid price. Bids can then be publicly seen in the bid history.

The auction would continue for another day to allow users in different time zones to bid on a shirt after the match ended. We divided these use cases into auction stages: Pre-Bid, During the Match (LIVE), After the Match (Auctions Open), and Closed.

I translated the match stages into colored labels. Also, I applied labels for the auction process to indicate whether a user is currently the highest bidder or outbid. With their unique shape, they always catch the eye of the user first.

A players closet right at your fingertips

A players closet right at your fingertips

Collections allow you to browse personal collections of some of football's biggest names—past and present—and celebrate the memorable stories behind them. It's hard to imagine if you haven't seen a closet of a football superstar, but their closet can be the size of an entire room, including hundreds of shirts from matches decades in the past.

The design challenge for collections was to digitally clean up a closet by dividing shirts into categories and allowing users to browse the collection as they would while browsing their favorite Spotify playlist. Just simple.

At my previous job at SAP, I learned to handle big data sets by solving for navigation first and integrating visuals as much as possible. Visuals weren't a problem here because of the fantastic Momento thumbnails I designed with Austin. Figuring out the navigation, we landed on a carousel view where a user could explore each year/section before tapping into the detail view. The first carousel section would always highlight the most valuable and iconic shirts of a player's career.

At its core, a design system defines the key visual and functional elements of a mobile application. This includes colours, typography, icons, input fields, buttons, toggles, and labels, among others.

From the very beginning, I recognized the importance of creating a design system that could be easily updated to allow for fast design iterations. As a result, I built the design system with flexibility in mind, allowing for quick and easy adjustments as needed.

This proved to be invaluable during the development process, as we were able to iterate on the design and user experience multiple times before launching the app in the App Store.

AND WHAT'S NEXT

AND WHAT'S NEXT

After months of hard work, it was a great feeling when we launched Momento Market. Seeing the app alive and filled with sports fans bidding on shirts during live matches was an outstanding achievement for the team and me. I can't remember a time in the last few years—probably except for the Embraer Avatar project (which you can find here)—when I learned this much about building a product. With an entirely new product already in the beta phase (link below), we are expanding our product offering to capture the engagement of millions of sports fans.
